Self-drive holiday from Naples to Capri

D 1: Arrival at Naples – Pozzuoli

Overnight: 3* hotel or B&B offering the same standard in Pozzuoli

Included meals: None

Day Itinerary

Upon your arrival at Naples airport, you will reach our Car Rental office to pick up your car. It is then easy to reach the motorway to get to Pozzuoli and check in at the hotel. If you arrive early, you may wish to visit its famous amphitheatre  (one of the biggest in Italy).

D 2: Ischia et Procida

Overnight: 3* hotel or B&B offering the same standard in Pozzuoli

Included meals: Breakfast

Day Itinerary

Today you will discover the islands of Procida and Ischia. Many boats depart from the port of Naples but we find it more enjoyable to depart from the small port of Pozzuoli. There are less boats but the setting is more pleasant, you can even go visit Serapide temple whilst waiting for the boat. It is also cheaper to navigate from this port as the islands are closer to Pozzuoli than Naples.

The island of Procida is truly a wonder. Its colorful houses sitting next to one and another overlooking the sea as they were standing shoulder to shoulder facing the wind. Small alleyways go up the castle and offer nice walks in this little town as well as breathtaking view over the little fishing port.

The island of Ischia is less populated, greener and renowned for its thermal and sulfurous waters.

D 3: Solfatara, Cuma Acropolis and Baia

Overnight: 3* hotel or B&B offering the same standard in Pozzuoli

Included meals: Breakfast

Day Itinerary

Today will be a busy day around Pozzuoli. First you enter the most interesting active volcano of Campi Flegrei: the Solfatara. Situated in the center of Pozzuoli, it offers the renown volcanic phenomena of fumaroles and hot mud holes.

Then you will go to the Cuma Acropolis (Scavi di Cuma) where the remains are very interesting. Because of its location on the top of a hill, it offers a superb panorama over the Gulf Coast and the islands.

Finally you will get to the incredible archaeological site of Baia. It was the favorite seaside resort of the Romans, famous for its thermal baths and beauty. During the boat trip excursion, you can admire this ancient city and in particular the villa of Lucius Pison, father-in-law of Caesar.

D 4: Vesuvius and Pompeii

Overnight: 3* hotel in Pompeii

Included meals: Breakfast

Day itinerary

Today you will mix archeological and vulcanologic discoveries. From Vesuvius to Pompeii, from the giant asleep to the petrified city. Drive to the volcano and climb to the edge of the crater. It is very deep and impressive with its almost vertical walls, and the variations of colors is also very beautiful  (from black to red through yellow). As for the view, it offers a magnificent panorama over the Bay of Naples.

Then you will go down to the famous site of Pompeii. The descent is long and it is hard to believe that the fiery clouds of the volcano could have reached here … Visit this incredible and moving site.
NB: the site of Herculaneum is also worth a visit, but we consider it preferable to take the time to visit the site of Pompeii calmly, rather than visiting both sites quickly, which have many similarities.

D 5: Sorrento peninsula

Overnight: in Termini or surroundings

Included meals: Breakfast

Day itinerary

Beautiful day along the coast to the end of the Sorrentine peninsula, facing the island of Capri. Little by little, the habitat is less dense, and the villages more typical, more charming. The winding road leads you to many viewpoints and photo stops until Termini. We advise you to climb to the top of Punta Campanella, where the beautiful San Costanzo chapel sits. The view is magical on Capri and the bay of Ieranto. It is a small bay with turquoise waters, hiding paradisiac creeks. You have to walk a bit to reach them (about 2h round trip) but the setting is superb. You can also opt for the beautiful, more conventional beach of Marina del Cantone.

D 6: Amalfi Coast

Overnight: in B&B in Scala

Included meals: Breakfast

Day Itinerary

Today we move to the sunny slope… It’s a real pleasure to ride on the small winding and panoramic routes of the Amalfi Coast. The small villages cling to the hillside and struggle against gravity so as not to fall into the sea. As you approach Amalfi, the houses are increasingly colorful. Visit Positano, Praiano, and finally Amalfi. These small villages are beautiful and deserve a break, an excuse to enjoy a nice ice cream! At the end of the day, drive to Scala, a small village perched above Amalfi.

D 7:  Capri

Overnight: in B&B in Scala

Included meals: Breakfast

Day Itinerary

Start the day by going down to Amalfi (it is also possible to take small alleyways and countless steps down from Scala) where you will take the boat to Capri island. You can also take a boat from Naples but the crossing from Amalfi is much more beautiful. The boat runs along the Amalfi coast, stops in Positano, and you can admire from the sea, these villages and cliffs that make the beauty of this peninsula.

Arrive in Capri, the island is very busy but keeps a charming atmosphere. Small pedestrian streets lead from the center of the village to the belvedere of Tragara, where you will enjoy a view overlooking the famous Faraglioni. You can also visit the Villa Jovis, or take the chairlift that goes up to the Monte Solaro, the highest point of the island, from where the view is breathtaking. Another option is to go to the famous Grotta Azzura. In late afternoon, return by boat to Amalfi, and visit this wonderful village before returning to Scala.

D 8: From the Amalfi Coast to Naples

Overnight: 4* hotel in Naples

Included meals: Breakfast

Day Itinerary

Neighboring village of Scala, Ravello is another treasure of the Amalfi coast that deserves a visit before getting back on the road. Move on along the Amalfi Coast, with always these small typical and colorful villages (Maiori, Minori). Then return quickly to Naples thanks to the motorway coming from Salerno. Restitution of the rental vehicle in the city center (access is rather easy coming from the motorway)

D 9: Naples

Overnight: 4* hotel in Naples

Included meals: Breakfast
